Court Appointed Therapist

Pat (Clearwater County)

Is there a mechanism in the Alberta courts to have a court appointed therapist help a child who is currently in the other parent's custody and is there a way to have it done soon such as an emergency order?

If so what kind of requirements would need to be met in order invoke such an order?

Mediation will be in a few weeks and will likely go to docket court but the immediate concern is that the other parent is currently causing significant emotional stress on the child which is manifesting as anxiety and depression.

Hi Pat,

Please take a look at the Alberta Court's Family Practice Note 7 https://www.albertacourts.ca/docs/default-source/qb/familypn7.pdf

This not a fast or cheap process; a PN7 Intervention generally runs into the thousands of dollars, sometimes tens of thousands. There are very few pyschologists who will do PN7 work, as writing a report for court purposes is very onerous. Consequently, the ones who will do PN7 work will charge a premium for their services. You may want to start your search here: https://www.afccalberta.org/referral-page.

I recommend that you contact a lawyer to get specific legal advice to decide if the PN7 process is right for your family.
